CPCS stands for Construction Plant Competence Scheme — the industry-standard certification for plant operators in the UK, including HIAB crane operators. Here is what it means and why it matters.
What Does CPCS Cover?
Managed by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), CPCS provides a competence framework for operators of construction plant, including lorry loaders — the category that covers HIAB cranes. To achieve CPCS certification, an operator must pass a Health, Safety and Environment test, demonstrate practical competence, and pass a formal technical test for their specific plant category. Cards are renewed regularly and require evidence of ongoing competence.
Why CPCS Matters for HIAB Hire
A HIAB crane is powerful lifting equipment. An improperly executed lift can result in serious injury or property damage. CPCS certification is the industry verification that an operator has the knowledge and practical skill to carry out lifts safely. Many principal contractors and construction clients will not allow uncertified plant operators on site — and it is simply the safest choice for any job.
ALLMI Certification
ALLMI — the Association of Lorry Loader Manufacturers and Importers — provides certification specifically for truck-mounted crane operators. Our operators hold both CPCS and ALLMI-compliant certification as standard.
RAMS Documentation
For commercial and construction HIAB lifts, a Risk Assessment and Method Statement (RAMS) is often a site requirement. We provide RAMS documentation for our jobs and have appointed persons on staff for complex operations.
Always ask any HIAB hire company whether their operators hold current CPCS or ALLMI certification. View all our accreditations here.
