Modular and volumetric construction is growing rapidly across the UK — from modular schools and hospitals to residential developments, hotel rooms, and student accommodation blocks. HIAB cranes are central to the installation process.
What is Modular Building Installation?
Volumetric modular buildings are manufactured off-site as complete three-dimensional units — fully fitted out including electrics, plumbing, and internal finishes. They are then transported to site and crane-placed onto prepared foundations, stacked on top of each other, and connected to form the complete building.
The Role of the HIAB Crane
HIAB cranes lift each module from the delivery vehicle and place it precisely onto the foundation or the module below. Accuracy matters — modules need to align with structural connections, service openings, and interface details. Our operators are experienced in modular placements and understand the tolerance requirements involved.
Site Preparation for Modular Installations
Before the HIAB arrives on a modular installation day:
- Foundations or podium structure must be complete and surveyed to confirm accuracy
- Holding down bolt positions must be correct
- Crane access route and outrigger positions must be clear and firm
- A lifting study must confirm the HIAB model is adequate for the module weights at the required reach distances
Long Reach Requirement
Depending on site layout, the HIAB may need to reach over existing structures, scaffolding or other modules already placed. This often requires our long reach HIAB capability — the X-HiPro 858 with its extended boom.
