How to Transport a Portable Cabin: A Step-by-Step Guide

HIAB truck delivering a Portable cabin in Manchester

Moving a Portable cabin requires a HIAB truck — a lorry with a hydraulic crane — to lift the cabin and position it precisely. Here is a step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Get the Dimensions and Weight

Standard Portable cabins range from 6m x 3m to 12m x 3m. Weight runs from around 2 tonnes for a small unit to 8 tonnes or more for a large welfare complex. Weight and size determine the HIAB model needed.

Step 2: Check Access at Both Sites

The HIAB truck needs to get close enough to the cabin to lift it. Check:

  • Width of access — can a large HGV get in and turn?
  • Overhead obstructions — power lines, trees, canopies
  • Ground conditions — can the outriggers be set safely?
  • Clearance for the crane arm to swing

Step 3: Prepare the Receiving Site

The cabin needs somewhere solid to land — concrete blocks, timber bearers or a concrete pad. The site should be level or close to level. Ground preparation should be done before the HIAB arrives.

Step 4: Book the HIAB

Call us on 0330 107 9400 with the dimensions, weight if known, and both addresses. We confirm the right vehicle, give you a clear quote, and book the date.

Step 5: On the Day

Our operator carries out a site assessment before lifting. The cabin is lifted using spreader beams or chains attached to the cabin's lifting points, then lowered precisely onto its new location. Most standard units take 2-4 hours depending on access and distance.

Remember: Services

Arrange disconnection of services (electricity, water, drainage) before collection, and reconnection at the new site. We handle transport and placement; service connections are the client's responsibility.
