HIAB Safety on Site: What You Need to Know

HIAB crane safely placing a site cabin on a construction site UK

A HIAB crane lift is a safety-critical operation. Understanding the requirements helps site managers prepare properly and ensures the lift goes smoothly.

RAMS: Risk Assessment and Method Statement

For any commercial or construction HIAB lift, a Risk Assessment and Method Statement should be prepared before work begins. The RAMS identifies potential hazards, outlines control measures, and describes how the lift will be carried out. We prepare RAMS for our jobs as a standard part of the service — not an optional extra.

Appointed Person

An Appointed Person (AP) is the individual responsible for planning and supervising a crane or lifting operation. For complex or high-risk lifts, we have Appointed Persons on staff who can be engaged to oversee the operation. For straightforward lifts, this role is fulfilled by our experienced operator.

Exclusion Zones

During a HIAB lift, an exclusion zone must be established around the crane and load swing radius. No unauthorised personnel should be within this zone. Site managers are responsible for ensuring the area is clear before the lift begins. Our operator will confirm exclusion zone requirements on arrival.

Outrigger Setup

Before any lift, outriggers must be fully extended and set on firm, stable ground. Our operators carry outrigger pads and will refuse to lift if ground conditions are inadequate. If you know ground conditions are poor at your site, tell us when booking so we can bring appropriate matting.

Overhead Power Lines

This is the most common site hazard for HIAB operations. Identify all overhead power lines before the HIAB arrives. A Safe System of Work must be in place for operating near overhead lines — this may involve barriers, height restrictors, or work under a Permit to Work issued by the line operator.

Our operators are trained to spot and raise safety concerns. Working safely is not an inconvenience — it is how we do every job. View our full safety accreditations.
